Bits & Bobs

I spent the day looking through the various boxes of parts from the car and identifying bits that still need work on them.

I have put together a range of parts that need passive plating to give them back their original silver finish and some parts that need re-chroming. The parts for re-chroming include the front quarter light frames which will need some repairs first as they were drilled all the way through for later non VW mirrors to be fitted. I do have frames from scrapped cars but these from the 62 are slightly different to later cars so I want to keep them.

I have also stripped the car jack and will be taking parts from it, along with the wiper arms, for gentle blasting during the next few weeks.

Start of the final phase

I have a date of 4 of June for the paintwork to be started on the car. This means I need to push on with seam sealing all panel joints, completing the drilling of holes for trim and then removing the body once again from the chassis. Can't wait to see it back in its original all black colour scheme like in the works press photo.
In the meantime I had contacted Newton Commercial here in the UK who, a few years ago, were willing to make up a set of carpets for me in the correct German square weave. they have now agreed a sole concession on all Type 3 carpet sales with T3D which will push the cost way past what i am willing to pay.
So bearing in mind that I made the carpet set for our 65 I have contacted the supplier of the square weave material used in the restoration of our Mercedes 190SL - they have an even better match to the original light/medium grey that was in the car when built.
So I am going to order MB10 Gray from them and use templates from other cars to make up the carpet set. I can do most of this from my 65, allowing for RHD to LHD conversion but will need to take templates from an early 62 for the carpeting around and below the rear seat area.

Instruments

I was sorting through my stash of instruments this morning, here are a couple of photos showing some of the various small differences over the years.

Rear end fit up

Got round to trial fitting the rear bumper and rear lights, just need to made the side mounting holes for the bumpers this weekend. Will also remove the old broken rear lock.

She has eyes

Well a little trial fitting up completed, all the bumper mounts were correct as were those for the head & fog lights and indicator & repeaters. I had to drill the holes for the early 62 badge and it looks more like a car with all this lot fitted back on.

The bumpers need to be rechromed but that will have to wait for a while. next will be the fitting up of the rear end.

Work planned for April

The major activity for April is going to be trial fitting back up of all the lights, bumpers and external fittings in advance of the car going off for its paintwork. I hope the car will go in for its paintwork at the end of this month at a local paintshop, the body will be removed from the chassis again to mave the paint process easier.

I also need to make the various holes for badges, sill trims and bumper side mounts that have been lost due to panel replacement but have templates for all of these made up.

The NOS generator which had been on the 65 for a few months was put back today after I fitted the reconditioned one to the 65.

I received a NOS horn through the post this morning, boght off the Samba and shipped from the US, should look good, not sure if I will put it on the 65 instead of the 62 as it will be more visible on that car.

Front Bonnet Hinge Repalcement

With March coming to a close I thought I would fit the front bonnet hinges that Clive Richardson donated last weekend at the Volsworld meeting.

Removing them was easy and I wasn't surprised to see that they were quite badly damaged and the cause of the poor fitting front bonnet.

You can see where the original one is bent and distorted as a result of the front end damage that the car suffered in an accident and also how it differs from the later one which has a re-enforcement plate fixed from side to side.

The bonnet has yet to go on but I am hopeful it will sit better with the new hinges in place.

Fire on the way to Volksworld

I mentioned in my last post that Dave Ball's automatic LHD suffered a serious fire on the way to Volksworld at the weekend. The car suffered an engine fire which Dave thinks was caused by a fluid leakage of some kind.

He managed to get out of the car and call the emergency services who put out the fire, but not until the rear end had been severely damaged.

The car was transported back home and is now awaiting insurance assessment. Dave came back to the show in his other car and even managed to do parts shopping for his bus restoration.

If any one has any bits that would help Dave rebuild his car, like a great late 1600cc 68/9 engine then post a comment here or on the T34 Registry.

Bits collected at VolksWorld and other stuff

Went to Volksworld today. I collected a reconditioned generator for the 65 from Charlie H which will allow me to put the NOS one back on the 62. Charlie also supplied a special spanner for removing the carb from the 62, always good to have as it saves removing the manifold and to have mates who look out for bits for you.

Whilst I was with him Charlie distracted me by pointing to the new wheels on Mike Dempster's great looking white Fastie with pigale interior as a result of which the sun shone so brightly in my eyes from the reflections in Mike's wheels that I had to go and rest in my car.

Should Charlie post any photos on his own website, purporting to show me a sleep at the wheel of my car, then you will know that I was just trying to recover from the blinding glory that is Mike's car!

I also picked up a couple of replacement front bonnet hinges and springs from Clive Richardson which he has kindly donated. The front bonnet continues to sit incorrectly against the bodywork and I am sure it is the hinges that are bent. It will be all hands on to try and change these over next month in advance of some breaking news on progress with the car.

Finally I picked up a small item for the car, the little plastic caps that go over the wiper spindles at a woping £1.60 the pair, no expense spared on my project.

Some sad news, Dave Ball was due to be with us in his recently restored car but it experienced and engine fire on the way to the show. Thankfully Dave was OK and turned up later in the day safe and sound. I'll post some pics of Dave's car post fire and let's see if we can round some bits up for him to put it back into the condition he had reached after all his hard work.

She's seen better days

I was just looking through some old photo CDs and came across these shots i took at the VW Classic in 2004 which I went to with Lee Hedges, John House and many more T34 Registery friends.

This project has been aborted and the owner has towed the car there for sale, amazing he didn't die with the tyre blow out. There was nothing much worth saving on the car but strangely enough it still has stuck onto the vin plate in the front luggage area the small aluminium vin tag that they put onto the key rings when the car was at the dealership before sale. It had remained there all the cars life just held on by a small bit of mastic.

I love the photos of Lee's cabrio in the front and the wrecker in the background.

Stickers

BerT3 recently master minded the reproduction of paint code stickers for Type 3s and also Oel stickers to go alongside the oil filler neck.

Here is a quick photo of them along with a paint sticker done for my roulette green 65 344.

Thanks Bert.
